Need for a new Community Choir
You are probably aware that churches on
the West Coast are using Choral Music less and less. With budget
restraints in the public schools, music in general and Choral music
particularly is falling away to sports and other demands on students,
not to mention the draw of entertainment, video games and the home
computer. However, we believe that Choirs still have a place in the
musical culture of America not to mention the culture in general. We know
that there are singers in our churches and communities who want to sing.
With that in mind, on March 17th, 2007 I started a community
choir in Tualatin, Oregon built on excellence that will carry on the Choral
tradition and provide a relevant model for Choral music in the future.
Voices of Hope Choir does not settle with mediocrity and does not exist
as a social club. Voices of Hope Choir
sings approximately 6 – 10 concerts each year. They group is developing
relationships with one another while working hard towards excellence,
singing a wide variety of music. All of this as we strive
to benefit others.

An open letter from Don Hofer, Director
– Voices of Hope Choir April 19,
2010
“Change is always difficult and this
announcement is extremely difficult for me.
Jill has been offered a full-time
position at one of the largest Southern Baptist Churches in the country.
After wrestling long and hard with the
idea, she accepted the position at Houston’s First Baptist Church in Houston,
Texas. www.hfbc.org We will be moving to the
Houston area on June 19, 2010.
It has been made extremely clear that
this is what we need to do in order to follow the plan for our lives and best
care for our family. It is very
difficult and scary adventure that we are embarking on.
Apart from some great friendships, VoH Choir is the
only thing that was keeping me here, and unfortunately VoH cannot support our
family at this time. It has never been
the mission of the group to do so. So many doors closed as I looked for
work. I didn't even get an interview for a church choir director job in
Portland. Now I know that I had to be prepared to say "YES"
to the opportunity before us.
This is an incredible opportunity for Jill. Not many people have
positions created for them. It will afford her the ability to continue to use
her gifts and talents and yet spend more with the kids.
The obvious question is “What will
happen to Voices of Hope Choir?” VoH
Choir is at a very healthy place. The
group is developing a great reputation.
The bookings are coming at a great pace. We have several concerts
secured already for the fall. The
group is growing musically and as a community.
The leadership team is in the process
of deciding if they are willing and able to lead Voices of Hope Choir through
this transition period. I have asked
to stay on with the Choir as Founding Artistic Director and continue to
advise the group. While they have not
yet decided to move forward, should they decide to continue there is a
conductor that I have talked with about conducting the group. He has studied the Bonner philosophy and
style of conducting. He speaks the
same conducting language, has the same philosophy of Choral music, will teach
with many of the same tools and will be able to take the group to the next
chapter should he be asked to conduct the group. Whomever is be asked to conduct Voices of
Hope Choir will have to fit within the vision and mission that has been laid
out for the group. That will not
change.
I just want you all to know how very blessed I am to
be a part of you and how privileged I am to get to lead VoH Choir. I
really can't even think about the day without you so I'll leave that to the
future and stick with the present for a while longer. We will continue to
work hard and focus our energy on continuing to fulfill our mission and
vision. I encourage you to continue
join us as we finish out this season of benefit concerts”.

Voices of Hope Choir is a
non-profit, auditioned group whose main
mission is to perform benefit concerts
that will support and raise awareness of the needs of our community while
furthering the art of choral music.
Our GoalsThe
group is modeled after The
Gary Bonner Singers
of Southern California and Breath
of Aire
from Seattle, WA. These groups have found great success in making a
difference in the lives of people all over the world. In the Voices of Hope Choir, our goals is
that each person will 1) Experience a wide variety of musical styles; 2)
Perform in exceptional venues; 3) Fellowship with other musicians; 4) Sing
challenging music; and 5) Give to others through the gift of music and
raising money to meet specific needs.
The singers in Voices of Hope Choir come from all walks of life and all
backgrounds. Their commonality lies in
the fact that they love to sing choral music.
If you know of
good
vocalists who have a desire to sing in a music community such as this, who
have a level of musical ability where they won’t have to be spoon-fed and who
you feel could contribute positively to a group pursuing excellence, please
forward me their contact information or direct them to contact me by e-mail.

"...Being involved in
this group has truly lit a flame within me that wasn't here. I'm sure
you know that as a parent your life typically revolves around your children.
As a working mother, my days are at the office and as soon as I get home I
want to be able to give all that I have to my family. And when you
throw the fact that both boys are so involved in sports into the mix, it
doesn't typically leave a whole lot of time for mom. Voices of Hope
Choir is something that has allowed me to rekindle my joy of music. It
also provides me with such wonderful fellowship! I hope to be involved
with it for as long as you'll have me! It's a very important part of my
life now and I am so grateful for allowing me to be a part of it
all."
